Review

"The design and organization of Teaching U.S. History Thematically encourages educators at all levels (e.g., teacher education programs, preservice social studies education candidates, and inservice social studies teachers) to reflect upon the curriculum and its purpose and to adopt an innovative approach for high quality lessons that promote an inclusive story of all Americans throughout history. Not only is the book a thorough and comprehensive guide for teachers, it is an invaluable tool for educators looking to encourage and enhance reflective practice and promote meaningful, engaging, and inclusive teaching and learning." ―Teachers College Record'Metro’s work is a useful source for those thinking of becoming social studies teachers. Rather than tell these new teachers what and how to teach, Metro’s work suggests a different approach. Some college and university professors might find the overall approach interesting if they are involved in training secondary education social studies teachers. It may help candidates think through curriculum development and lesson and unit planning." ― H-Net"This is an indispensable guide for any teacher looking to bring serious intellectual engagement to the history classroom."―Sam Wineburg, Stanford University"Written from a practitioner’s perspective, Rosalie Metro provides a wealth of suggestions for structuring a year-long U.S. history course based on themes rather than solely on the timeline. Full of thought-provoking essential questions, engaging primary source documents, and an impressive array of classroom activities, Teaching U.S. History Thematically is the must-have resource for history teachers looking to stay relevant in our modern learning landscape."―Diana Laufenberg, lead teacher and executive director, Inquiry Schools, Philadelphia, PA" Teaching U.S. History Thematically provides teachers a practical yet compelling response to problems in history education. Metro’s approach to providing historical study through themes, primary sourcing, inquiry, and current topics combines what educational researchers and policymakers denote as best educational practices. The book is a useful resource for novice and experienced history teachers, social studies teacher educators, homeschooling, and community educators. I am excited to use in my college classes; this is required reading!”―LaGarrett King, University of Missouri“A remarkably thoughtful and engaging aid to teaching U.S. history. Using carefully chosen primary documents, Metro raises pointed questions that will help teachers and students alike wrestle with the place of the past in the present.” ―Jill Lepore, Harvard University

I purchased this to help guide my instructional planning for my 11th grade U.S. History class. I really like the format of this book and the idea of teaching the course thematically. The book does do a very good job of giving you an idea of how to break down the course into thematic units and gives lesson plans for those units. If you just want to see how to structure the course thematically, you can get most of what you need from the table of contents- which is available for free to preview on Amazon. The reason why I didn't give this five stars is because the book has three fundamentally fatal flaws...First, the lessons provided in the book are not really realistic for a high school classroom. If I used these activities in the book the way that is indicated in the included lessons- I think that my students would revolt after a week or two of doing pretty much the exact same thing each day. Each lesson pretty much involves the same setup: 1) Opening Question and discussion. 2) The teacher gives some background about the topic in a mini-lecture that lasts like five or ten minutes. 3) Students read the primary source and answer 2-3 questions. 4) A quick class-closing discussion. I like the included documents- but the fact that students are going to be doing the same thing each day is unrealistic (or just horrible teaching if you follow the book's exact format).Second, there is absolutely no differentiation present in this book. None. Unless you have a class full of on-level readers who have no special needs, the teacher will need to make significant adjustments to the lessons.Third, and this is related to my second concern above... This book assumes that students will be able to read and understand all of the documents. If you teach in a prominent area where you are lucky enough to have students who all read on or above level- you can probably use this book as long as you understand that you'll need to switch up the structure of the lessons so that students aren't doing the same thing each day. If you aren't lucky enough to teach those type of children, you'll need to do some heavy-duty adjustments to differentiate so that students of all abilities can understand the texts and how they fit into a unit's theme.I've been teaching for eleven years- and I've never been the type of teacher that just grabs something out of the teacher's manual or curriculum guide. Working in an impoverished school where my students include low-reading levels, poverty, trauma, and are often unmotivated- I've always had to significantly modify resources and texts to fit their needs. This book is no exception. I love the ideas presented in the book- but they will likely need to be significantly modified to meet the needs of most students/classrooms.

I used this for my adult education classes, and I loved it. It has great questions and is very adaptable.

I love this book! It came in super handy for my student teaching, in which I passed!!! It helps to promote literacy fluency and development. The lessons are easy to complete in one class period, but I would go in depth and cover documents in two days (along with activities and presentations). This was an amazing book and I’m glad I purchased it.

I am student teaching next year, and this book has awesome lesson plans in it. Gave me great ideas.

I love thus book. It has addressed the boredom of students learning about US history. Teachers can add to the lessons presented and there are room to create your own themes. I am so thankful for this book.

Wonderful idea in changing the approach to teaching Us History

I am a high school history teacher and in the past couple years have started looking at teaching my classes thematically. I came across this book and had it ordered for my department. It has led to some amazing discussions and professional development at our school.First I like how thoughtful each unit is. Far from being just a straight, chronological exploration of history, the units are well crafted, using modern day issues as a jumping off point. I found myself diving into the documents because the essential questions helped to pique my curiosity and I have used this book to structure my own thematic units.Second, I like the questions that are included for each document. Ms. Metro again does an excellent job of being thoughtful. These are not just simple comprehension questions. Many of them ask students to refer to previous documents and previous units to compare perspectives, and the questions have some built-in activities as well. Finally, I found it helpful how Ms. Metro includes a basic overview of how her class was structured. This helped to provide a useful framework and helped me to visualize how it might look in my own classroom. If you are looking for a unique and innovative approach to history teaching, than this book is for you. I don't think that Ms. Metro intends that people will just buy the book and use it word-for-word. Rather I think she wants it to inspire teachers to think outside the box we have put ourselves in by way of conventional textbooks.

Really practical and it has given me good ideas for history lessons

Bambi is a Hofmeister Industries series nine cybernetic pleasure unit: a human body governed by a computer… except that she was born Erica Jones. This story covers her transformation from a normal woman to a remote controlled slave doll, and her sexual adventures along the way.

[Warning: this 8700-word story is filled with vivid scenes of sex and brainwashing.]

Excerpt:
“Tell your prospective buyer how you feel about getting an entirely new personality put in your helpless brain, so you can be his toy.”
I knew permission when I heard it. I relaxed and moaned, “Good, sir. So good.”
“Show him.” My handler let go of me abruptly, putting me off balance.
I rolled with it, dropping smoothly to my bare knees on the cool floor instead of trying to catch my footing.
Mr. Middleton’s blue eyes went wide and I leaned forward and pressed my cheek against his very expensive Italian loafer. I savored the smell of leather as I nuzzled one foot, then the other. I could feel his hesitation even without looking at him.
I pressed the advantage, just like I’d been taught. I raised my head just a little and began to beg, “May I show you what I’m for, sir? Please?”
He replied, “I, uh… well…”
Mr. Williams said, “You know what you came here for.” He was keeping a lid on his amusement.
That was thoughtful.
I rubbed Mr. Middleton’s left calf with my cheek like a great cat and continued, “All this talk has me so hot, sir. I need you inside me.”
“Here?” Mr. Middleton asked, “In front of Mr. Williams?”
I glanced up. Mr. Middleton was blushing, but he wasn’t turned off. He wanted to do it, he just needed a little push. I bit the inside of his right thigh lightly, enjoying him tense. Then I said, “I’ll take you both at once. Please. Just use me. Here on the floor.”
Mr. Middleton shifted. He’d obviously made his decision. He twined his fingers in my hair possessively and tugged my head up so that our gazes met. He said, “No, I think I’d like a little privacy with you.” He looked up at Mr. Williams and asked, “That all right?”
Mr. Williams said, “Just her mouth, ‘til you buy her. I’ll wait just outside the door, and we can finish your tour after.”
I shivered at the two of them talking about me like a piece of meat. I didn’t comment, though. I just looked up at Mr. Middleton, watching his face.
His fingers clutched a little tighter. He nodded and said, “That’ll work.”
Mr. Williams gave me a pat on the cheek and said, “Be a good little fuck doll for Vic, Bambi.”
I moaned, “Yes, sir.”
He swept past me, heading for the door to my showroom.
Mr. Middleton didn’t wait for it to close. Instead, he looked down and asked, “He said all I got to use was your mouth. So… can you unfasten a pair of slacks with your teeth?”
I looked at his fly, and watched a progress bar quickly fill. Instructions opened in my pliant mind. It didn’t look that hard. I smiled and said, “Yes, sir.”
He let go of my hair and said, “Show me.”

Review

“This is the northern voice on race―multiple perspectives and divergent experiences, but a common call for change on one of the most pressing issues of our time. Brave and poignant, full of true grit and wisdom, A Good Time for the Truth is a compelling challenge to us all.”―Anton Treuer, author of Everything You Wanted to Know about Indians but Were Afraid to Ask“Sun Yung Shin has brought together a collection of passionate literary warriors whose fierceness is equaled and at times surpassed only by their love of community, and of us, the people for whom they speak. The unburdening that takes place here is specific and yet representative. Either way it is heavy. Deep. You will not be able to read this book without changing. Minnesota will never be the same.”―Alexs Pate, author and president, Innocent Technologies, LLC

Book Description

In this provocative book, sixteen of Minnesota’s best writers provide a range of perspectives on what it is like to live as a person of color in one of the whitest states in the nation. They give readers a splendid gift: the gift of touching another human being’s inner reality, behind masks and veils and politeness. They bring us generously into experiences that we must understand if we are to come together in real relationships.  Minnesota communities struggle with some of the nation’s worst racial disparities. As its authors confront and consider the realities that lie beneath the numbers, this book provides an important tool to those who want to be part of closing those gaps. Sun Yung Shin is the author of a book of prose Unbearable Splendor, two books of poetry Rough, and Savage and Skirt Full of Black, a co-editor of Outsiders Within: Writing on Transracial Adoption, and author of children's book Cooper's Lesson.

WOW!!! If you ever wanted the opportunity to vicariously walk in someone else's shoes, this book helps with that process. The essays are easy to read, well-written, informative, and thought provoking. The experiences shared by the writers are candid and honest, allowing the reader to abandon his/her own reality to become enveloped in someone else's world. There were many perspectives that I could relate to, but others that allowed me to see a person of color's perspective from a new lens. I am thankful to Sun Yung Shin for bringing this talented group of writers together for such an important piece of work and I am grateful for the stories that were shared.

A thoughtful amalgam of MN writers tell their stories of how MN avoids, demeans, ignores and dislikes the bigoted, racist, hateful underbelly of racism on a daily basis. A series of intimate looks at how racism affected the lives of bi-racial black, Hispanic, Korean, Chinese peoples in the MN Not-Nice environment to a surprisingly ugly degree. A MUST READ if you are "WHITE" and especially if you think you are "NOT PREJUDICED",

Excellent essays on what a minority experiences in Minnesota, a state that prides itself on its liberal heritage. A state that somehow has viewed itself without prejudice. A state that prides itself on Lake Wobegon without recognizing the cost of that view on minorities. The self-reliance, the enforced distance between neighbors has had a cost on those who aren't like the vast majority. The essays are well-written in most cases, and deserve to be studied with a view to growing the state closer together. And for most of the citizens who don't live in straitened circumstances, a book that is instructional: what it's like to be 'the other."

This book contains several raw, honest, and superb essays from various Minnesotan authors. I picked up this book from the library without knowing much about it and was instantly captivated —so I purchased my own copy.I am a huge fan of Diane Wilson and Bao Phi’s writing and both authors are featured in this book. These essays are truly representative of the POC experience, not just in MN, but cross country. POC or not, I think we can all understand and relate to these writings. This is a book I will continue to reference and recommend.

The content at times was hard to process. I needed time between each story to process what I had just read. It changed the way I see a lot of things in the Minnesota. I learned a lot. Felt my heart break several times but I truly feel like a better more enlightened person for having read these stories. To see the world through the lens of a person who looks different than you is something we should all experience. I highly recommend this book. It has aided so much in my awareness.

This is an excellent book that is sure to open the eyes of everyone who reads it. The stories and essays are written by gifted authors who express themselves with honesty and integrity. It helped educate me on the myriad of experiences that are part of being a "Minnesotan," not just my own very limited perspective. It opens your eyes to the institutional and systemic racism that warps the way we white people experience the world and promises the possibility of a richer, deeper experience of being fully engaged with our neighbor.

Definitely worthwhile. Many perspectives and all good writers!

This collection of essays is important for two significant reasons. The first is the most obvious, which is a candid and powerful view into issues of race (the focus is on Minnesota, but it's applicable for all of us in the U.S., not just Minnesotans). The second is the power, intensity, skill, and variety of approaches of the writers. Other than this being a who's who of established and up and coming writers in the northern state, this book is simply a work of literary art. This is already a must-read for all of us.
