From School Library Journal Grade 3-7 Yep looks at the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from two points of view. Chin is a young Chinese immigrant whose father is a houseboy for a prominent banker and his family. He has become friendly with young Henry Travis, the banker's son, through their interest in low-brow but exciting penny dreadfuls. The stories depict heroic people doing heroic things and, while both boys appreciate their fathers, they certainly do not regard them as heroes. Not, that is, until the Earth Dragon roars into consciousness one spring morning, tearing the city asunder and making heroes out of otherwise ordinary men. Yep's research is exhaustive. He covers all the most significant repercussions of the event, its aftershocks, and days of devastating fires, and peppers the story with interesting true-to-life anecdotes. The format is a little tedious one chapter visits Henry's affluent neighborhood, the next ventures to Chin's home in Chinatown, and back again and the ordinary heroes theme is presented a bit heavy-handedly. Throughout the text, the boys compare their fathers to Wyatt Earp. But the story as a whole should appeal to reluctant readers. Its natural disaster subject is both timely and topical, and Yep weaves snippets of information on plate tectonics and more very neatly around his prose. A solid supplemental choice. From Booklist Gr. 3-5. On the evening of April 17, 1906, neither eight-year-old Henry nor his friend Ching is aware that the earth beneath their San Francisco homes is shifting. Devotees of "penny dreadfuls," both boys long for excitement, not their fathers' ordinary routine lives. When the earthquake shakes the city and a firestorm breaks out, Henry and his parents scramble in the chaos and battle the fire, but must ultimately evacuate their home. Ching and his father survive the collapse of their Chinatown tenement, and flee to the ferry through the debris and turmoil. In the midst of catastrophe, the boys realize that their fathers are real-life heroes. Henry and Ching's stories are told in alternating chapters with a few interruptions for the insertion of earthquake information. Told in the present tense, the narration provides a "you are there" sense of immediacy and will appeal to readers who enjoy action-packed survival stories. This is hands down one of the most beautifully designed And easy to follow how-to books I've seen, and it does indeed offer many great tips on soldering. What's special about it is that you have clear (and large) pictures of the steps needed, and lots of inspirational photographs to draw from. I'm so happy to have this book. Not only does it deserve to be in a jewelers library, but it could also sit on my living room coffee table for guests to leaf through!

I have read every book on torch soldering jewelry using gold or hard silver solder that I can find and this is the best for the basic techniques. There is nothing very sophisticated, but the advice is solid and the photos are very clear. If you are new to soldering this is perhaps the best choice. The examples are mostly gold, however, the advice is equally applicable to silver so if you work with silver buy the book. I did learn a few tricks which made it worthwhile. The author has several ideas about how soldering should be taught that are insightful and I believe correct. This isn't the book for learning to repair prongs but if you are new to soldering or are having problems with it, this is worth every penny.

Excellent primer on soldering for both silver and gold alloys. Ms. Caines explains every step with clear and concise words, and boosts them with stunning pictures. I am an amateur silversmith with basic formal training, and I learned valuable tips that my previous instructors left out. I'm glad she takes the focus away from the soldering pick (never really liked that thing anyway) and puts it on better techniques. I was previously taught that heat is a "solder magnet," but was never really taught how to use it in my favor. Ms. Caines asks you to stop moving that torch around like a nervous monkey and point it where it matters! The pictures in this simple read are absolutely beautiful and the tutorials are easy to follow. I just wish it was printed in gloss paper, instead of matte.

This is one of those books that you buy because it's beautiful, you want to learn more and it is inspiring just by looking at the beautiful cover.....THEN, you get inside and it blows the doors off of its fellows! There are many great books on the subject but Jeanette K. Caines takes soldering myths and puts them to the grindstone! So many things we learn are debunked, proven wrong, and she tells us WHY and how (!!) With all of her confidence in writing this excellent book, she remains humble, believable and approachable. I have a library of books on the subject of soldering, I would growl and defend this book from being swiped, over all the others, LOL!! I say RUN! Don't walk to the "buy" buttun to treat yourself to some of the best, time liberating, confusion clearing, confidence boosting instruction on soldering and making jewelry, there is!

I have been taking metal smithing classes for 3 years and Have never gotten totally proficient at soldering. This is the BEST book I have ever read that addresses all the questions you could ever want to ask. Jeanette Caines must be a fabulous teacher because this book shows her talent. The only disappointment I have is that she does not identify the jewelry she has made and the stones she has chosen for the illustrations. If you have a love of making jewelry, or if you have a friend who does, buy this book! If I could give it a 10 star, I would. Thank you Ms Caines!

For the price there are better books on soldering out there. This one did not cover as much of the little issues that come up in a soldering project as I would have liked. I think many long time jewelers forget those little hints that help beginners, because it's second nature for them. A great set of books is Joe Silvera''s "Soldering Made Simple" and "Soldering Beyond The Basics".

Very pretty book. Probably swayed my purchase. The photography is excellent. The soldering methods are good. The explanations could use a little work. I expected more thorough illustrations and step by step procedures demonstrated. Also, having looked through the book on Amazon's site prior to purchase, I was very disappointed that all the granulation shown in abundance throughout the book does not even get a mention in all the technique nor the text.

Great book with clear instructions. Yes, it is as another person pointed out, mostly for beginners but as I have been away from soldering for a couple of years it fits me also. And even with soldering background it pointed things out I didn't know. I guess because I am mostly self taught these things were missed in my learning.
