We pass through the legendary castles of Elsinore and Halsingborg to enter the Baltic world. From early Viking days and then under the Byzantine empire, the Baltic was always much more than Europe's backwater, and in medieval times the area was an important trading ground. Each individual country developed separately, but then in the late 17th and early 18th centuries came the sole attempt to create a unified Baltic Empire based in Sweden. However, with the rise of Russian influence, this came apart and Russia expanded her empire in the region, annexing Finland, to be followed by the Prussianising of the Polish provinces. Great national sentiment grew in all Baltic states, and a high cultural level was achieved - both musically and in literature. The 20th century has been a defining one for the Baltic region: the Eastern Front in the First World War; consequences of the Russian Revolution; the rise of aggression with the Nazi-Soviet Pact and then the Second World War. The economic and political issues coming out of the end of the war were compunded by the Cold War and Communist expansion in the Baltic states. And in the last decade the European ideal has spread and been adapted within the Baltic, as these lands open up to the outside world.

Review
'This is no social history but a huge narrative sweep across centuries of war, from the Vikings' long boats to Gustavus Adolphus and well beyond. A huge, highly ambitious book' -- Good Book Guide 20050701 'This assured work is a calm and confident guide to a sea that knows relatively few tremendous storms but whose waters and storms have been the satting an exciting and varied history' -- History Today 20050901 'This is not a book about shipping per se, but a compelling history of Scandinavia, Russia, the Baltic states and an area of Europe so very different from those bordering the Mediterranean.' -- Lloyd's List 20050715 'Palmer's panorama perceptively grasps the inter-relationships of the Baltic nations within European history...a timely reminder to the EU...that "past history has seemed to haunt present politics"' -- Geographical Magazine 20050901 'Fascinating' -- BBC History 20051001 'The Baltic played a crucial role in the shaping of modern Europe, as Alan Palmer demonstrates in this engaging historical panorama ... Vivid and readable ... [He] recounts his story in the lucid, unjudgmental diction he has made his own ... He makes characteristically deft use of historical comparison ... Palmer also has an admirable eye for telling detail' -- Christopher Clark, Sunday Telegraph 20050703 'This cauldron of jostling powers is summed up in a single sweep, and in irrestistibly lively style' -- Michael Kerrigan, Scotsman 20050702 'With his deep knowledge of European history, Alan Palmer is the ideal guide to the variety, intricacy and drama of Baltic history. The conflicts, customs and culture, as well as the personalities of this neglected region come to life in these pages. Any traveller to the Baltic will take this book and be both instructed and entertained by its broad, fast-flowing panorama.' -- Sir Martin Gilbert 20050310 '[Alan Palmer] has proved yet again that in the field of popular history probably his only rival is Sir Martin Gilbert ... very well researched and written in a simple, elegant prose style' -- Konstantin Eggert, The Tablet 20050716 'A story rich in fascinating and formidable characters ... Alan Palmer steers a skilful course through this maze of material' -- The Spectator 20050730 'A fine example of the skills that have brought him [Palmer] fame and fortune ... he handles complex material so logically and elegantly that the reader can easily digest a diet of unfamiliar names and places ... grippingly described' -- The Economist 20050716
